Our board members have closely collaborated with Governments, employers and key organization to ensure that the voices of our community are being heard. By working closely with these key leaders in our economy, our board members have steered our Centre and community towards its mission.
Meet our Board members
Wiggert’s career has evolved around accounting and finance with general management thrown in in several positions. He attained the position of Controller of a financial institution while temporarily taking over the position of VP Finance. In general management, Wiggert was the Director of Administration for a large law firm. Now he provides accounting services independently.
Wiggert’s education ranges from a number of University level courses to 5 levels of the CGA program.
Tatiana Usova, MA, MLIS
Elected to the Board in 2011, Tatiana is the Head Librarian of the Bibliothèque Saint-Jean, University of Alberta. She fluently speaks three languages, and holds three masters degrees – one in Education, one in Communications, and the third in Management of Library and Information Science.
Native of Belarus, Tatiana immigrated to Canada in 2006. Prior to her arrival in Edmonton she had lived and worked in four different countries, including Belarus, the US, Poland and France. Her international background and experience fostered her interest in other cultures, and sharpened her ability to see things from different perspectives. Tatiana is actively engaged in the life of French and Russian-speaking communities of Edmonton, and she volunteers for a number of non-profit organizations. Tatiana is proud to be on the Board of the Bredin Centre for Learning, and has a deep appreciation of the organization's work improving the quality of people’s lives in Alberta.
Karen Carleton, MEd, MS
Karen is a workforce learning and performance expert who has long partnered with organizations to enhance employee competence development and results. Her work has included doing needs assessment, instructional design, facilitation and program evaluation. Karen has long been involved with adult education training, career preparation, and ESL therefore she feels connected to Bredin’s programs. A high school teacher by profession, Karen has worked in all sectors with diverse clients including industrial employees, newcomers and Aboriginals.
Karen is proud to see Bredin deliver positive results for clients and sponsors. She especially enjoys hearing about how many people Bredin has helped obtain employment in their respective fields. She has taught online for both MacEwan University and the University of Calgary, and holds a Master of Science degree in Instructional and Performance Technology (Boise State University), and a Master of Education degree in Workplace and Adult Learning (University of Calgary).
Maple Rose Furigay, LEED® AP
Maple Rose is a LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) accredited architectural technologist and communications professional with an international career spanning architecture/construction, IT, publishing and arts/culture/education. After working abroad for 8 years, she returned to Canada to pursue her passion for buildings. Currently, Maple Rose is the managing director of an online platform designed to simplify the procurement of sustainable building products and materials. Recognized for her dedication to advancing sustainably built environments, Maple Rose received a 2013 USGBC (US Green Building Council) GreenBuild Scholarship in the US, and was featured in issues of Perspectives (Alberta Chapter – Canada Green Building Council).
Maple Rose believes Bredin plays a critical role in contributing to our local economies by delivering the necessary services that meet employment demands of our marketplace. She appreciates Bredin’s industry leadership and dedication to the success of every client.
Joe Huising, CFA, CMA
Joe joined the Bredin Board in 2014 and has a background in finance and management with both public and private corporations. New to-not-for profit organizations, Joe looks forward to adapting his business, financial controls and corporate governance experience to support Bredin’s management.
Joe is the CFO of Tier 1 Energy Solutions Inc., a privately held oilfield services company operating in Western Canada. Joe received his CMA in 2003 and his CFA in 2013. Joe recognizes the importance of training and development and believes Bredin serves an important niche in a market, which is critical to the future success of Alberta.
Tara is a business consultant guiding the development of realistic, executable succession plans for business leaders. Tara’s post-secondary education began with Computer Programming and Systems Analysis. Tara has built and operated successful family owned companies in British Columbia and Alberta for over 25 years. Her business ventures with her husband included the development of a large recreational property and a road building trucking company in BC to Swift Environmental Ltd. here in Edmonton who provides specialized equipment to the oil & gas industry.
One of Tara’s passions is building leadership within organizations. Tara draws some of her most rewarding leadership learnings from her three children. She says about her children “They have taught me how to effectively lead by using a constant improvement model”, although this is a playful comment on motherhood, it represents her leadership style of determination, attentiveness and role modeling.
Through Tara’s initiative Swift Environmental was nominated for the Manning Award in 2014, Albert Exporters Emerging Exporter in 2013, Emerald Awards in 2013. In 2014 Tara’s company was chosen by the University of Alberta business program as a case study for the MBA students.
17 years ago, Earl Shindruk combined a wealth of business experience and his natural ability to deal with people when he founded Optimax Benefits. As President, Earl has brought leading edge, industry innovation to Optimax Benefits. At the same time, he has demonstrated the old fashioned concepts of ‘being accessible’ and ‘getting to know your customer’.
Formerly, Earl served as General Manager of a contracting company and honed his skills with large corporations such as TransAlta and Laidlaw Waste Systems.
Earl was one of the founders and board chair of the Meningitis Foundation of Alberta. He has been involved with several not for profits and charities, serving on various boards such as North Millbourne Community League, Millwoods Cultural and Recreational Facilities Association, Bredin Centre for Learning and others.
Earl believes in giving back to his community and donates a great deal of time, energy and expertise to charitable and not for profit organizations in Northern Alberta.
Earl also believes in sharing his knowledge and expertise. He is a Benefits instructor at MacEwan University and regularly discusses the benefits industry through a variety of networks.
